SEPA Working Groups Discussion: CIM for the Catalog of Standards

A SEPA Working Group Invitation . . . 

Good Day SEPA Working Group members,

 

SEPA hosts and maintains the SEPA Catalog of Standards to provide electric power system stakeholders with a source of industry vetted standards that our members consider to be relevant for the development and deployment of a robust and interoperable Smart Grid. 

 

Industry vetting is the key part of this process. Candidate standards undergo a rigorous review process that includes Grid Architecture and Cybersecurity elements provided by third party subject matter experts. SEPA Working Group members have the opportunity to engage in this review process and to evaluate proposed candidate standards and specifications.

 

Candidate standards that are reviewed and deemed relevant by Working Group members will be inducted into the SEPA Catalog of Standards, a publicly available resource that benefits industry stakeholders by providing information on a curated list of 80+ smart grid standards. 

 

SEPA members and stakeholders have advanced the colloquially termed “Common Information Model” (CIM) group of standards as the 2023 candidate for the SEPA Catalog of Standards.

 

This CIM related SEPA stakeholder review will cover IEC 61968-11:2013 (Application integration at electric utilities - System interfaces for distribution management - Part 11: Common information model (CIM) extensions for distribution) and IEC 61968-13:2021 (Application integration at electric utilities – System interfaces for distribution management – Part 13: Common distribution power system model profiles). The supporting materials are attached below (can be viewed when opened in the GROUPS platform) and available for your review.

 

*NOTE: This discussion is scheduled for one hour. We will start with IEC 61968-11 and only continue to IEC 61968-13 if time will allow. Should we run out of the scheduled time, 61968-13 will be scheduled for a following date.

 

In preparation for the discussion, please review the material provided for the candidate standard. You will find the following items for each candidate:
  • SEPA Cybersecurity Standard Review Reports, containing a summary of the findings and justifications
  • SEPA Grid Architecture Standard Review Reports, containing a summary of the findings and justifications
  • SEPA Standards Information Forms (SIFs), contains detailed summaries of key elements relating to smart grid deployments and interoperability (the master list)
  • IEC 61968-11 and 13 Candidate Standards Review presentation, PowerPoint deck containing the highlights of the findings and the departure point of group discussion
